4. Altimeter

An audible altimeter is worn on the inner side of the helmet and indicates the instructions directly into the ear.

5.  Main Canopy

The main canopy is important gear to manage the jumper’s skill and weight while downsizing. The size of the canopy and selecting the right canopy is an important decision that is made to avoid bruises and injuries.

6. Reserve Canopy

The reserve canopy is used to save the jumper’s life in case of the failure of the main parachute. Avoid saving money here and always get the best of the reserve canopy. Warming up before doing your singing training or performance is such an essential aspect of any singer’s routine. Many amateur singers succumb to injury early in their careers because of overexertion and lack of a proper warm-up routine. Injury can easily crash any aspiring professional singer’s dream.

Singing for fun and singing semi or full professionally are two different things. For the former, you can sing without much thought in front of your family and friends, or belt your favorite songs on the karaoke. If you are the singer of the group, you might even be invited to sing for events such as your best friend’s wedding. Singing for fun binds people together and can help increase your self-confidence.

Just who is Gillian Joseph? Well, there is the daughter of a retired headmistress. Then there is the married mother-of-two who describes herself as a bog standard working mum. And then, finally, there is the successful newsreader that became the face of BBC London News for many years. Whoever Gillian is, she is about to shed some light on the skills and qualities needed to have a successful career in broadcast journalism.

Aspirations and Journalistic Influences

Given that Gillian has managed to maintain a progressive career and a seemingly demanding private life, the subject had to be addressed: Before stepping into the industry, did she have any journalistic influences and aspirations? “Of course,” she answered excitedly. “I grew up with Trevor Macdonald and Moira Stuart. They were the people that made me think it was possible to reach my goals in journalism. I admired Kate Adie also, but I knew that once the children arrived, I wouldn’t be stepping foot in any war zones. You take fewer risks when you are a parent.”

Fewer risks? Maybe! Still, being able to raise children and pursue a career is a significant achievement and a risky sacrifice. But when it comes to achieving her goals, Gillian makes no compromises.

Society’s Perceptions of the Media Industries

The journalism industry is changing; it is evolving, as is society. And to stay relevant, the media should reflect today’s developing society. Many complain that people from ethnic minority groups are underrepresented in the media. But from the industry’s perspective, what matters is that the there are many more ethnic minorities now than there used to be; and there are much more to come in time. “It is not all about those who are in front of the camera,” she said indisputably. “There are many black people behind the scenes. Not appearing in front of the camera is not a sign of failure.”

Broadcast Journalist Should be Ambitions and Resilient

During her lively career, Gillian has had many driving forces, including her mother, husband, and children. But her ultimate driving force has been her ambitions and strength of mind. In spite of the knockbacks, she remained strong and focused – an accomplishment that is usually easier said than done. “I have never wanted to give up. If you can remain driven despite setbacks, then journalism is the field for you. Disappointment will come, but you have to embrace it and learn from it. There is no such thing as failure; just lessons on the road to success.”

But getting in the field of broadcast journalism should not be about wanting to become famous. “You must remain strong and resolute and be completely focused. If that [being famous] is your goal then you might as well enter the next round of Big Brother;” advised Gillian.

As for those that are unrelenting: “Keep knocking at those doors. You will not be ignored forever. Once your integrity is intact, then I think you will find your niche.”

One of the things that Gillian has demonstrated throughout her career as newsreader and reporter are that she is not afraid to experiment with different things. After a successful career with BBC London News, she moved to Sky News where she was fronting the evening news program. “I am extremely excited about it because Sky News is undergoing a complete re-launch. It is fantastic to be in on a project at the start.”

Gillian hopes that wherever she goes, she will always be challenged and never lose the excitement that she gets every time she goes on air. Midway through her already successful career, Gillian has achieved masses – and she is grateful for the career she has had so far. She said: “To be honest, broadcasting to the nation, daily, has been a real privilege. I suppose standard things, like winning a CRE (the Commission of Racial Equality) Race in the Media Award are always nice. My whole career has been a highlight.”

In a world where competition is so fierce, getting a foothold into broadcasting is not always easy. But perseverance is vital, and those who make the most of the ups and downs of the journalism industry may find that their resilience will lead them to that crucial first step of the journalism career ladder. Work experience also counts for everything in journalism. So it is worth gaining plenty of it while still in education and building contacts at the same time, which prove crucial in this industry.

The Value of a Company’s Return on Asset Utilization

An entrepreneur’s initial investment into a business is the company’s assets. The main purpose of the original investment is to generate income, particularly in the TV and film industry. It’s important to realize a good return, but just how much return depends on the industry. We will try to delve deeper at the importance of the return on assets (ROA), how it’s calculated and how it’s measured.

Since the main purpose for business assets is to generate income, ROA measures how well the company’s assets are working within a given accounting cycle. A higher percentage means the company does a good job of utilizing what it has. The formula for calculating return on assets is:

ROA = Net Income/Average Total Assets

To get an accurate percentage, the net income for a given accounting cycle needs to be calculated with the total average assets for the same accounting cycle. For example, if the year-end financial statements are used for calculating ROA, total net income would be reported for the year. Assets from the balance sheet, however, may not be averaged for the entire year. If financial statements were completed at month’s end, the assets reported at year-end would be the end result, not the average. Lending institutions will also use ROA as a measuring tool to determine loan amounts, rates and terms. Bankers understand that companies that utilize its assets proficiently minimize the risk of loan default and insolvency.

ROA Comparative Measurement

Simply determining the ROA ratio is useless unless there’s a base of comparison. Once the return on assets percentage is determined, it should be compared to the industry standard for the specific business. For example, the food processing industry reported an average return on assets for the 1st quarter of 2018 about 9.41%. So the base of comparison for a food manufacturer would be 9.41%. Therefore, a manufacturer that has a percentage higher than 9.41% has better utilization of assets than the industry average.

Analyzing ROA is an important tool for determining asset utilization. There are other financial statement ratio tools that can help the business entrepreneur analyze profitability. ROA and other analytical tools are essential for measuring profitability and maintaining positive trends.

Understanding a Producer’s Job

Quite frankly your understanding of the film producer’s role is a little off. I am a member of a director’s guild, and there are much simpler ways of understanding what producer’s do.

The ‘executive producer’ is, simply put, the money behind the project. They keep an eye on the project from afar and rely on reports from producers and key artists.

The only real reason for an executive producer to get involved is if the show is going over budget or the product is looking bad.

The title producer usually refers to the most senior person responsible for production working near the shoot. They are involved in the hiring and firing of people and oversee how the budget of the film is being spent. You can think of this person as a Director’s fiscal conscience. An example of this would be something like a big crash scene with a Ferrari – the Producer would most likely determine how many Ferrari’s if any, the show could afford to crash to get the shot the director wants.

A co-producer is an individual with specialized knowledge required to make the film. For example, a production company might do all of its location work in London, England but then for financial reasons relocate to a city like San Diego to do all of their studio work. The producer that knows how much everything should cost in London is unlikely to know how much things should cost in San Diego so production would hire a co-producer to give them the added knowledge they would need accomplish the fiscal savings. Much of these savings are actually in the form of tax credits so accounting is a very big part of the job.

An associate producer is generally someone more loosely involved with production. You may hear jokes that they are the relatives that were somehow able to get jobs but this is not entirely fair. I generally find that they make good mediators when a dispute arises between a fiscal and creative choice.

Creative Input

Strangely, the producer’s creative input into a film project is significantly lessened when a director is brought on board. Though producers are ultimately responsible for the amount of money being spent on a film, they do not always get their way. I have seen many Producer’s open up the checkbook against their will. It is only so much you can do when you are halfway through a project, and high priced talent decide they want to do something a specific way – because unfortunately if someone has already invested $50m in a project what another $1m is to them? Evaluating the Worth of Netflix Streaming Service

We have been subscribers to Netflix for over five years now and can honestly say that we have never had a service where we felt we got so much for our money.

In the beginning, we signed up for the option where you receive just one movie at a time. This for us was just to try it out. We dutifully went online to our queue and picked out titles that we liked and sat back and waited for the entertainment fun to begin. It didn’t take long. Within a matter of days we had our first red and white envelope in our mailbox and gladly sat down and watched a movie that we didn’t have to go to the video store to rent. It was marvelous.

It was so marvelous in fact that we soon upped the number of titles we could have at home at one time. This was because we are apparently not the typical Neilsen family who can find something they want to watch on cable nearly any night of the week. For us, staring numbly at the screen as we pathetically ran through the hundred or so channels offered became more than we could bear. So, we found ourselves finding other things to do than watch television.

Then, I had to have surgery, which left me flat on my back for nearly two months. I can honestly say were it not for Netflix, that time would have been far worse. It was during this time that Netflix began offering some of their movies online, which was perfect for me as we had wireless Internet service and a very nice large screen laptop. I watched videos and old television shows and documentaries and anything else that suited my fancy. It was a pleasure to have the movies coming in the mail as well because those we watched together.

Basic Service

Unfortunately, not long after that we experienced a sudden downturn in our income, so one of the things we downgraded was Netflix; back to just one title at a time. It as a sad day, but not so when we discovered we could still watch as many titles online as we wanted. So, that’s what we did after we had the cable downgraded to just basic service.

We’ve kept our service at one title at a time ever since, even though our fortunes have improved. This is because we now also have this cute little netbook which fits snugly on the lap and is quite lovely for sitting around eating popcorn and watching movies together with our knees banging.

All in all, we have no complaints with Netflix. They’ve delivered on everything they’ve promised and continually strive to improve their services through modifications to their suggestions. I’d heartily recommend them to anyone who likes watching movies.

The Ugly Truth about Reality TV

Reality TV concepts need not be cringe-worthyThe term “Reality TV” is in itself a misleading title. In “reality” the whole genre should be classified as “Staged Reality” as the scripting of performance for these untalented, ordinary people is an insult to reality as we know it. The result has allowed the networks to produce copious amounts of meaningless drivel at little or no cost while appealing to the pitiful “rubberneck” mentality of today’s masses.

How often have you been driving down the freeway, suddenly get stuck in traffic? And upon proceeding to find that the only reason for the standstill was everyone slowing down to stare at a horrendous wreck that occurred on the other side of the freeway. This is what the reality TV producers thrive on. Never in history has such a mass of untalented people been considered worthy of being classified as entertainment. Never has there been such widespread availability of communication media been available to so many that have nothing worth saying.

It is not so long ago that we had a version of reality television that was available to the public. It was called “The News”. Even this form of communication has been corrupted beyond recognition as the scripting and sensationalizing of world events has descended into the depths of entertainment, and fallen under the hammer of the rating companies.

It is high time that entertainment regains its status as a skilled career choice and that the mundane and ridiculous antics of the average person be relegated back to home movies and karaoke bars. Not everyone deserves the right to be famous. This is an accolade that should only be earned by the deserving and the talented.

The History of PBS in New York

Everyone has known and heard about PBS, the Public Broadcasting System. A user-sponsored television channel that does not run advertisements. But instead relies on user donations during their yearly telethon to raise revenue. A few realize that before PBS was the Public Broadcasting System. It was known as the National Educational Television and Radio Center network shortly after ETRC, or the Educational Television and Radio Center. It had moved its headquarters from Ann Arbor, Michigan to New York City in 1958. At this time what would soon be known as PBS was not considered to be a fourth television network. ETRC had only been showing 5-hour blocks of programming and had little actual entertainment value to offer.

When New York City was the new home of the NETRC the cultural diversity and dramatic change in programming. From the old ETRC network may have been the catalyst for it now having a little bit of “flavor.” They began to bring in programming from the BBC. And ran hard-hitting documentaries and took on what some consider to be a liberal style. They underwent yet another name change in 1963 to NET. The American government got involved in 1968 and created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. PBS itself was formed when NET merged with WDNT (which was later branded WNET). When the Ford Foundation that was responsible for initially creating the ERTC decided to withdraw its funding.

NYC Culture

The style of programming on PBS has not changed since then. WGBH in Boston does all of their educational programmings, while WNET in New York. WPBT in Miami do all of their news and informational programming. Shows like “Charlie Rose” and “The News Hour” with Jim Lehrer come out of New York. Not all of the programs on PBS have been created through funds by viewers; the network always uses the “Viewers Like You” phrase when this is the case. New York still has a profound experience on PBS however, as shows like Sesame Street, though initially produced by WGBH are obviously filmed in New York City. Many of their documentaries have that “New York” feel to them, and much more are actually about life in New York itself.

A great example of this is their online documentary “Hidden New York,” and “New York: A Documentary Film”. If you want to take advantage of the highly independent film culture of New York, working for PBS may be a great place to start. There may be no way for a film school graduate to get closer to the action than through this excellent source of inspiration that PBS provides.

NATEXPO-2015: How Industry is Moving Forward in the Difficult Times

This year two events coincided: the international exhibition of professional equipment and technologies for TV, radio, Internet broadcasting «NATEXPO» conference and exhibition of equipment and technologies for film «MCA Expo». And exposure they had actually shared. We asked participants to answer three questions:

1. Preliminary results: the company spent in 2015? Successes / destruction, achievements / deficiencies.

2. The most promising areas of development in your market segment?

3. Does viable policy of import substitution in the Russian broadcasting industry, how do you see the implementation of such a program?

Antti Laurila, CEO, Qualitron group:

1. Results: In spite of the difficult economic and political situation in the Russian market, we remain on it. To our regret, this year we didn’t had any large-scale projects in Russia, which we could be proud of. But we worked on small projects and continue to support our existing customers. This situation has prompted us to search for new solutions, that we have found few from a software industry, for example, the company File Catalyst, which significantly speeds up your media files.

2. Prospects: Our industry is rapidly moving towards information technology. Of course, cameras and microphones will remain, but then everything will be more or less IT-based. Possibilities of virtual studios and augmented reality are truly limitless.

3. On import substitution: Qualitron has been in the Russian market more than 25 years and we have no intention to back up even times are now difficult. Both EU sanctions and Russian import substitution schema are harmful for business. As a system integration company, we don’t have problem with the import substitution because we can and have work with Russian manufacturers. I think it is even vice versa because for Russian manufacturers it could be very beneficial to work with Qualitron because we can be their gateway to European market. And we already have used some Russian products in our projects in Europe.
